Tigerlily SPIRIT Retreat: A Review

On October 24th 2020, Tigerlily hosted its annual SPIRIT Retreat, only this time, we went virtual.

Our world has changed since the last in-person Tigerlily SPIRIT retreat in May 2019.  Since we are unable to travel and gather in-person, the Tigerlily community brought its SPIRIT online with the onset of COVID19 and the launch of the Pure Cat Initiative in March 2020.

In honor of Catherine Odderstol, a sassy yogi who danced through life, the SPIRIT Retreat had a renewed energy this year, with a holistic approach to spirituality and self-care.  Cat was dedicated to helping others have a Mind, Body, Spirit approach to health and wellness.

The day opened with welcoming words from Founder Maimah Karmo, Tania Koulakian, Programs Director, and a beautiful video of Cat Odderstol.  Natalie Lewis led us through an intention setting and meditation, incorporating the palo santo and rose quartz that were part of the Tigerlily Care Package which was mailed to each participant.  Esther Boykin and Patricia Fox came together to discuss The Importance of Self-Care, and participants joined Zoom Break-Out Rooms to create their own Self-Care Toolkits.

The second half of the retreat featured an accessible movement practice with Tania, workshops including: Mental Wellness with Esther Boykin, Emotional Freedom Techniques/Tapping with Mary Phelan, Holistic Nutrition with Lauren Neuburger, and Meditation with Natalie Lewis.  Michaela Bekenn offered a soothing Sound Bath, and Poornima Kadambari closed with a World Peace Prayer.

The energy of the retreat was one of exploration, coming together in a new virtual community space, creating openness, grounding, and most importantly: self-care.  Together we created a space of rest, nourishment, and coming-home to ourselves.

Valencia Robinson, Pure Cat yoga instructor and breast cancer survivor, joined the retreat as an attendee:

What is your perspective for your life?  The Spirit Retreat by Tigerlily
Foundation helped me to better understand and reflect on the experiences
that I have gone through in my life and how those experiences have shaped
the person I am today.  I was able to retreat in my own home, listen to prayers and words of wisdom from those who have also experienced a diagnosis and how they overcame. We may not have a choice about what we go through, but we can choose how we go through any adversity that we encounter was the overall theme of the day.  I met women from all over the world in this spirited retreat and our time together was insightful and relevant.  We all want to experience the best that life has to offer so we must continue to believe in our healing and have a perspective that everything is beautiful…..

Although the retreat day has come and gone, many of the speakers and instructors are offering classes through the Pure Cat program, including Yoga with Valencia, Sound Bath with Michaela, Meditation with Natalie, and a monthly Prayer Circle with Poornima and Patricia.
