We believe that literacy, financial barriers, access, social, systemic and hereditary backgrounds should not be determinants of life and health equity. Particularly as patients are impacted by COVID and post COVID pandemic repercussions, the pandemic has had and will continue to impact health disparities for black women within the cancer research and cancer care ecosystem. In order to continue to accelerate and make an impact as it relates to disparities and Black women, the #InclusionPledge is imperative.

Shannon has spent the last 20 years working in clinical research because she wanted to make a difference in the lives of people living with cancer. Her recent experience in caring for her dad during his cancer treatment has reignited a spark, deepening her commitment to making sure patient and advocate voices are at the center of all she and her teams around the globe do in their work developing clinical trials. Shannon encourages patients to consider a trial as part of their care plan because, even though there may be risks, clinical trial participants have the first chance to try tomorrow’s treatments today. When you’re living with cancer, like Shannon’s father, every day in treatment matters.![]()

Susan works every day to ensure other patients, regardless of race, ethnicity, or any other factors, have the same opportunities she had during her own breast cancer treatment. As a patient herself, she knows that learning to be your own advocate is essential. While not everyone lives near a major institution like Memorial Sloan Kettering where they can request a meeting with the research department to learn about their options, Susan and her colleagues at Parexel is working to make clinical trials accessible for patients who live further away from research sites by decentralizing components of their trials when possible. This means trial participants have fewer visits to the research centers and are able to complete some of the necessary tests in their home or local communities.![]()
