Today, there are over 250,000 women living in the United
States, who have been affected by breast cancer. Every
three minutes, a woman is diagnosed. As a young survivor,
we know that we generally have more aggressive cancers
and our cancers have a higher mortality rate, yet women
are still being told to wait until 40 to get mammograms
and most young women are not aware that we can and do get
breast cancer.
Additionally, researchers are not studying young women because
apparently, there is not a large enough population of us
to study. Well, one of my close friends have over sixteen
girlfriends who were under 35 die this past year from breast
cancer; mostly because they were misdiagnosed.
Breast cancer is highly curable...when diagnosed in time.
We need to raise our voices and make them heard, so that
more young women become vigilant about their breast health,
do monthly self exams and if there is a malignant lump, get
diagnosed in time.
We need to get more women engaged in clinical research studies
and trials, so that we are a part of the study and treatment
design process.
We need to have a voice in terms of healthcare reform,
so that the insurance companies WILL pay for all of our
mammograms, even if we are under 40 - because they should
be.
We need to make sure that women know that breast cancer
is not a death sentence. We need women to speak about
the things that affect them in regards to breast cancer
and see how they are making a change.
We need to be our own best advocates in order to contribute
to our survival and a world free of breast cancer for
future generations.
this page, listen to the voices speak out. I know
that by raising our voices, we can and will make a change. |
