Event Purpose:

The mission of the Tigerlily Foundation is to educate, empower, advocate for and provide support to young women – before, during and after breast cancer. The focus of this event is to bring to the forefront:

  • The fact that young women can be and are diagnosed with breast cancer
  • Raise public awareness of the issues that they face
  • Provide a forum to discuss ways to improve education, treatment, quality of life for young women living with breast cancer.

This 3rd Annual event will feature Dr. Isaac Eliaz, MD, who provides both traditional and integrative treatment to breast cancer survivors.  He will discuss additional ways to enhance the quality of life for the patient during and after treatment.   We will also hear from Dr. Otis Brawley, Chief Medical Officer of the American Cancer Society, breast cancer survivors and other health experts.

Honorable Representative Cardiss Collins
Recipient of the Ultimate Early Act Award

A trailblazer in women’s health legislation, the Honorable Rep. Cardiss Collins authored a decisive step in the fight against breast cancer, when the President signed her resolution proclaiming October 1990 National Breast Cancer Month. Collins also authored the 1990 law which expanded Medicare coverage for screening mammography for millions of elderly and disable women and legislation to create the Office of Minority Health in the National Institute of Health.

Elected to 12 consecutive terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, Cardiss Collins ranks as one of the longest-serving minority women in the history of Congress. Succeeding her late husband, Representative George Collins, after his death in 1972, Cardiss Collins continued his legacy. One of only a handful of women to serve in Congress for more than 20 years, and the only black woman in the chamber for six years, Representative Collins evolved into a dedicated legislator who focused on the economic and social needs of Americans.

Collins declined to run for re–election to the 105th Congress (1997–1999). Vowing to remain active in Democratic politics, she nonetheless decided that the time had come to end her career in elective office. Collins cited age as a principal motivation for leaving office.  After the completion of her last term, she returned to Chicago, Illinois, and, later, moved to Alexandria, Virginia.
